us saying the democrats from parkersburg, west virginia. caller: good morning. i was inspired by president obama's speech yesterday. we were certainly on a downward spiral and after he took over we continued downward. now i think things are showing in little but a promise. we are on the way back up. on that recovery, is it going to be a recovery for the american people or will it be a recovery for the corporations that do business both domestically and internationally? it has got to be for the people to rebuild the middle class. that is where the tax base comes from. host: the president talked about the middle-class system. his speech is available on our website, c-span.org. a derrick from washington, d.c., you say either the third party or you don't know. caller: it is a third party. i am 47 years old and from my lifetime i was a democrat, i was a republican, i will cover -- brought me to my senses. in that neither party. america is in a unique paradigm. right now all of the stimulus packages that are being proposed -- the federal government is broke. this money is being prin
with an impressive track record of predicting such trends. director of the university of virginia politics and joins from us charlottesville. good to see you this morning. let's talk about what you got in your crystal ball. you are talking about essentially a gop takeover of the congress or very, very close to it. in the senate eight to nine gop seats is what larry is predicting in his crystal ball. pickup of 47 seats in the house for republicans, governor's races could swing eight of those seats to the gop side. all in all, pretty impressive election result there if all of that pans out. how did you come to these conclusions. you know, we are hearing that a lot these days. you know, forecasts are coming out. how do you get to those conclusions? >> jim, of course, we studied every race just about every day. this is our job. and we look for lots of different indicators. generic ballot, democrat versus republican. presidential popularity, state of the economy, and the strength of individual candidates, there are so many factors that go into each thing. look, jim, you have been around a long time. you

mean, the state of virginia, you know very well a few weeks ago in that primary vote, you were up, what, 35 percent in a republican turnout over last time? >> huge. bill: that's substantial. >> you're going to have -- there's no doubt in my mind you're going to have a very big republican turnout and much of it if not most of it will be a protest vote. protest votes are very powerful motivation, not to be underestimated and apathy in midterms with the party in power is also a very distinct problem that occurs tile and again, particularly when times are bad, and times remain bad in the eyes of most americans. americans weren't loving the way the economy was growing when it was growing in the middle years of the bush administration, they certainly aren't happy with it now and they're not going to be happy any time soon. these measures taken now by the president i don't think are going to have any noticeable effect. bill: we'll debate if this in 30 minutes with doug schoen and brad blakeman. good to see you. >> i hope so. juliet: such a cool guy. >>> tropical storm hermine barreling into th
